About Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)
Kuala Lumpur International Airport is Malaysia's main gateway to the world, located in Sepang, roughly 45 kilometres south of the city centre. Officially opened in June 1998, it was designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa around the idea of an airport built within a forest, with landscaped greenery running through its terminals rather than sitting outside them.
Terminal 1 is the original main terminal, serving full-service carriers including Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, and Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Terminal 2, known as klia2, was purpose-built in 2014 for low-cost carriers led by AirAsia and remains one of the largest dedicated budget terminals in the world. Both terminals connect to the city via the KLIA Ekspres rail line, which reaches KL Sentral in under thirty minutes, and both offer prayer rooms, halal dining, and duty-free shopping throughout.
The airport is operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and handled over 65 million passengers in 2026 across three parallel runways, each between 3,800 and 4,000 metres long. It is the home base for Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, and is also served by Batik Air, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US-Bangla Airlines, and dozens of other carriers.
