About Bandaranaike International Airport
Bandaranaike International Airport, also known locally as Katunayake Airport, is Sri Lanka's primary international gateway and the main hub for SriLankan Airlines and FitsAir. Located in Katunayake, Gampaha District, approximately 32 to 35 kilometres north of Colombo city centre, it is easily accessible via the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway.
The airport opened in 1967 and is named after S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, the fourth Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. It handled over 8.8 million passengers in 2024 across one active runway of approximately 3,350 metres. Terminal 1 is the current international terminal with 12 gates, duty-free shops, passenger lounges, and full check-in and customs facilities. Terminal 2 is currently under development and expected to add 96 additional check-in counters, while Terminal 3 handles domestic flights within Sri Lanka.
