About Kathmandu

About Tribhuvan International Airport
Tribhuvan International Airport is Nepal's only international airport and the sole gateway for all air travel into the country. The airport sits in the Kathmandu Valley, ringed by the Himalayan foothills. It is your arrival point from Dhaka, and for many travellers it is also their first proper glimpse of Nepal — on clear days, the approach offers distant views of snow-capped peaks.
Located around 6 kilometres east of central Kathmandu and Thamel, close to the Pashupatinath Temple, the airport opened in 1949 as Gauchar Airport, was renamed Tribhuvan Airport in 1955 after King Tribhuvan, and was upgraded to full international status in 1964. It handled around 7.8 million passengers in the first 11 months of 2025 alone, already close to its designed annual capacity of about 8 million, across a single tabletop runway (02/20) extended to around 3,350 metres in 2020. Around 30 international carriers connect Nepal to more than 40 destinations across roughly 17 countries.
The International Terminal handles all international flights, served by carriers including Nepal Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, IndiGo, and Air India, and includes a duty-free shop, cafes, and paid executive lounges run separately by Hotel Soaltee and Hotel Radisson. The Domestic Terminal, located around 500 metres away, serves domestic carriers such as Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, and Saurya Airlines to destinations including Pokhara and Lukla.
